After three years of design and construction, one of Devons largest luxury homes reached completion in mid-2019. The multi-million-pound house nestles into the hillside overlooking the sea below. JGP provided civil, geotechnical and structural engineering services for the entirety of this state-of-the-art ultra-high spec example of modern domestic architecture.
In order to achieve the architect’s vision, the space on the site was extended by cutting into the coastal slope to facilitate the construction of the main house. JGP carried out the ground investigations, as well as designed and detailed the rock anchored spaced piled walls and slope stabilisation works. The design enabled a 5m retained height to be achieved.
The four-storey superstructure is a complex combination of reinforced concrete, braced and portalised steel framing supported on an arrangement of piled and ground bearing foundations.
Some of the other more interesting elements of design included seaward facing cantilever balcony structures; circular steel-framed glazed lantern with cantilever helical staircase; a 25m long reinforced concrete lap swimming pool; subterranean surface water attenuation tanks; multi-storey garage and guest accommodation, right through to vehicle turntable substructures and bespoke outdoor leisure facilities.
